This position serves as a vital link in patient care, obtaining and preparing specimens for laboratory testing while performing both automated and non-automated procedures. The role is designed to provide high-quality lab results for inpatient and outpatient customers, directly aiding in the diagnosis and treatment of patients across all age groups, from neonates to geriatric adults.
You will be responsible for collecting blood specimens via venipuncture or capillary methods and conducting urine drug screens in compliance with DOT specifications. Beyond specimen collection, you will perform basic and advanced emergency, therapeutic, and diagnostic laboratory procedures tailored to the specific needs of diverse patient populations. Your work ensures the accuracy and reliability of test results through rigorous calibration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of laboratory instruments, as well as the execution of quality control protocols.
In addition to technical duties, this role involves significant collaboration and leadership. You will serve as a primary or secondary responsible person for assigned areas or instruments, ensuring survey readiness through maintenance, quality control, and competency assessments. You may also act as a "Charge Tech," overseeing daily operations. The position requires training others, managing inventory, resolving billing errors, and answering complex inquiries regarding test methodology and interpretation.
This role demands high accuracy under moderate time restraints and requires the ability to work safely with disease-causing agents. You will interact closely with patients, families, and colleagues, necessitating strong communication skills and the ability to participate in conflict resolution. The position requires physical presence onsite and the flexibility to adapt schedules to meet the varying needs of patient care.
The work environment is fast-paced and requires the ability to maintain composure and a cooperative attitude, even in high-stress situations. You must be sensitive to the needs of others, manage emotions effectively, and be open to change and variety within the workplace. The role involves light physical work, including lifting up to 20 pounds occasionally, bending, stretching, and performing fine motor tasks such as adjusting machine controls and handling specimens with steady hands.
