The Chief Building Official serves as the Administrator of the Building Division within the City of Cheyenne's Compliance Department. This leadership position is critical to ensuring the safety and integrity of the city's built environment by directing the operations of the Building Safety Division.
In this role, you will develop policies, administer the building safety inspection program, oversee plan review activities, and manage licensing and permit issuance. You will act as the primary liaison between the Building Permit and Inspection Division and other City departments, outside agencies, contractors, architects, engineers, and the public. The position requires navigating sensitive and controversial issues while maintaining high standards of customer service and regulatory compliance.

As a key member of the Compliance Department, the Chief Building Official plays a vital role in interpreting and enforcing adopted City building codes, coordinating the adoption of new codes, and ensuring the successful implementation of safety standards across the community.
Candidates must hold a certification as a Certified Building Official from the International Code Council or another approved agency, or demonstrate the ability to obtain such certification within six months of hiring. The selection process will evaluate candidates based on their experience in building code enforcement, construction management, architecture, or engineering, as well as their supervisory capabilities.

Associate degree in architecture, civil engineering, construction management, public administration, or related field. At least seven (7) years of increasingly responsible experience in building code enforcement, architecture, engineering, or related field, including at least three (3) years in a supervisory/managerial capacity.
