The Department Chair will drive the organizational mission of healing, education, and discovery, overseeing the educational, research, and clinical activities of the department. This role reports directly to the Dean of UT Health Science Center COM-Knoxville and serves as the Service Chief for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery for the University Health System's University of Tennessee Medical Center.
As the leader of the department, you will foster a culture of excellence in scholarly activity, including education and research, while ensuring the department meets all UT Health Science Center policies for financial management. Your day-to-day leadership involves recruiting, mentoring, and developing faculty to promote regional and national recognition, as well as conducting performance evaluations. You will model wellness among faculty, staff, and trainees, and provide strategic leadership in implementing the medical center's strategic plan, including clinical integration. Additionally, you will foster collaboration with industry and institutions to advance the research and innovation mission, while building partnerships within the medical center and the larger community.
The University of Tennessee College of Medicine - Knoxville (UT Health Science Center COM-Knoxville) was established in 1956 and has evolved into a hub for graduate medical and dental education, research, and clinical care. The campus mission is to advance medical education to train the next generation of physicians and dentists, deliver comprehensive and compassionate care through its hospital partner, UT Medical, and conduct innovative research meaningful to patients and families.
The Knoxville Campus provides training for third- and fourth-year medical students, second-year physician assistant students, and graduate medical education for 11 primary residency programs and 17 subspecialty fellowships. With 548 faculty members, 245 residents and fellows, and an average of 40-50 medical students per month, the campus also offers Continuing Medical Education services and Advanced Medical Simulation. The college sponsors extensive translational research in clinical and laboratory settings, collaborating with various institutions regionally and nationally, including other UT Health Science Center campuses, the University of Tennessee at Knoxville (UTK), and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
