The Respiratory Care Practitioner I (Certified) serves as a foundational member of the clinical team, executing assignments that demonstrate a basic level of clinical competence in Respiratory Care. Working under regular supervision and approved protocols, or under the order of a licensed independent provider (LIP), this role is dedicated to the continuing development of proficiency in selecting accurate technical factors for individual patient needs.
The position requires the ability to evaluate and provide age-appropriate treatment across all patient types and locations. This includes managing cardiopulmonary dysfunction secondary to developmental defects, the aging process, physical injury, or disease. The role involves the administration of inhaled medications, the utilization of specialized ventilation equipment, and the performance of a variety of respiratory care techniques.
You will function as part of a larger team to support patients under the department's care, often managing an assigned caseload and responding to emergent patient needs under the oversight of a senior practitioner. Your day involves performing respiratory care for varied patient populations, verifying that all interventions are supported by protocol or LIP orders, and monitoring physical signs, symptoms, and general responses to procedures.
You will participate in patient rounds with LIPs, assisting in the initiation, modification, or discontinuation of treatment regimens. A significant portion of your time will be spent administering therapeutic and diagnostic gases, aerosolized medication treatments, and chest physiotherapy. You will also manage invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation, adjusting equipment to optimize patient support while ensuring correct ventilator alarms and settings.
Collaboration is key; you will work with the healthcare team to adjust ventilation parameters based on patient response. Effectiveness of interventions will be evaluated by reviewing chest x-rays, utilizing noninvasive monitor values, and analyzing laboratory results. Throughout the shift, you will document accurate patient care activity in electronic health records and adhere to Joint Commission, State, Federal, and organizational regulatory compliance standards.
