CAN Community Health operates as a not-for-profit organization within the hospitals and health care sector, headquartered in Tampa, Florida. Since its founding in 1991 by Susan Terry in Sarasota, the entity has evolved from a single clinic into a national healthcare provider. The organization maintains a multi-state footprint with clinical locations across Florida, Arizona, New Jersey, South Carolina, Texas, and Virginia, delivering specialized medical services for over three decades.
The organization serves individuals affected by HIV, sexually transmitted diseases, and viral hepatitis. Funding sources include Ryan White grants, STD prevention programs, the 340B Federal Drug Discount Program, and philanthropic contributions. These resources enable the provision of comprehensive care regardless of a patient's financial status. Services encompass HIV, viral hepatitis, and STI testing; medical care including rapid start protocols and pre-exposure prophylaxis; primary and dental care; sexual health education; mobile medical units; peer navigation; patient coordination; nutrition support; tele-health; and transportation assistance.
Through these programs, the organization aims to increase viral suppression rates, reduce infection rates for STDs and Hepatitis C, and enhance the overall quality of life for community members. The operational model emphasizes removing treatment barriers through collaborative partnerships with local, state, and national entities. Clinical and support staff work to create accessible environments that facilitate the linkage, retention, and sustained care of individuals within the healthcare system.
