The U.S. Meat Animal Research Center (USMARC) is a 34,000-acre facility located near Clay Center, Nebraska. The work performed at USMARC supports research focused on solving high-priority problems for the U.S. beef cattle, sheep, and swine industries. As part of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln system, USMARC operates within a welcoming and supportive environment known for its commitment to professional growth and making a meaningful impact in the agricultural sector.
As a Cattle Ranch Supervisor, you will serve as a key operational leader at this agricultural research facility, bridging the gap between research goals and daily livestock production. In the livestock industry, this role is often referred to as a Cattle Barn Manager. You will be responsible for the general care and husbandry of approximately 800 to 1,200 cattle, ensuring their health and well-being while supporting critical research activities.
Your day-to-day responsibilities will involve a blend of skilled agricultural duties and management oversight. You will oversee daily health care, perform artificial insemination and pregnancy palpation, and provide care during calving as needed. The role requires active engagement with the land, including maintaining machinery and fences, assisting with pasture management, and developing or executing rotational grazing plans. Additionally, you will assist in the collection of research data and provide occasional supervision for a team of 1 to 4 employees.
This position demands adaptability, as it involves irregular hours and working in inclement weather. You will be required to travel frequently between pastures and facilities to ensure the smooth operation of the ranch. Within the UNL system, this position is categorized as an Ag Research Technician II.
