About the Role

The City of Poulsbo Building Department is seeking an innovative and hands-on leader to serve as the Building Official. This role is designed for a team player who values the efficient delivery of building plan reviews, inspections, and system improvements. As the technical authority for building code compliance, you will lead and supervise the Building and Inspection Team, ensuring the safety and integrity of all new construction and alterations within the city.

You will foster a supportive work environment that promotes professionalism, continuous improvement, and a positive workplace culture. In this position, you will not only manage the division's operating policies and procedures but also serve as the primary point of contact for interpreting building and land use codes for staff, developers, builders, and the general public. Your day will involve a dynamic mix of office-based strategic planning, fiscal management, and on-site field inspections across diverse construction environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • check_circleResolve conflicts regarding inspection standards, code interpretations, and compliance issues
  • check_circlePerform on-site field inspections to verify compliance with safety and building codes
  • check_circleApprove or disapprove building plans, permits, and alterations for compliance
  • check_circleManage fiscal planning, budgeting, and program execution for the division
  • check_circleDevelop, implement, and administer division operating policies and procedures

Requirements

  • verifiedHigh School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • verified5 years experience in construction, engineering, architecture, inspection, or project management
  • verifiedPlan review experience for residential, commercial, and single-family buildings
  • verifiedICC Certified Building Official (CBO) designation at time of application
  • verifiedICC Fire Code Official (FCO) designation within 12 months of hire
  • verifiedValid driver's license with acceptable driving record
  • verifiedWashington State driver's license within 30 days of hire

Nice to Have

Three (3) years of experience serving as a Certified Building Official (CBO). Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in construction, building inspection, plan review, or code enforcement, including experience as a Building Inspector, Plans Examiner, Senior Inspector, or a combination thereof. Washington Association of Building Officials (WABO) Accredited Code Official (ACO) designation. Supporting certifications such as ICC Building Inspector, ICC Plans Examiner, and Mechanical / Plumbing / Electrical inspector certifications.
