This is a full-time, career Law Enforcement Officer (LEO) position designed for individuals with prior military police or state/local law enforcement experience. Your prior experience may qualify you for higher-graded opportunities (GL-9 or GS-11), allowing you to hit the ground running in a role that combines physical patrol, investigative work, and community protection. You will be part of a dynamic environment where your day-to-day duties involve detecting and questioning individuals suspected of violating immigration laws, maintaining surveillance in covert positions, and interpreting physical evidence of illegal entry. Whether patrolling international boundaries, coastal waterways, or urban areas using vehicles, horses, or specialized equipment, you will exercise sound judgment and make rapid decisions to uphold the law.

Upon hiring, you will be detailed to the U.S. Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, New Mexico, for approximately six months of intensive instruction. Training covers immigration and nationality laws, law enforcement tactics, driver training, physical techniques, firearms proficiency, and USBP-specific operations. The agency also provides training to ensure agents become proficient in Spanish, a critical skill for the role.
Duty assignments are determined at the time of offer based on operational needs and may include prioritized locations along the Southwest Border. While candidates can select preferred mission-critical locations, assignments may not always align with first-choice preferences, and relocation may be required.
