This is a full-time, career Law Enforcement Officer (LEO) position designed for individuals who love protecting their community and keeping the nation safe. Whether you are transitioning from a military police unit or bringing experience from a state or local law enforcement organization, you will have the chance to work with a diverse array of assets—from vehicles and horses to vessels and off-road vehicles—to patrol international boundaries and coastal waterways.\n The day-to-day reality of a Border Patrol Agent involves detecting and questioning individuals suspected of violating immigration and customs laws, interpreting tracks and physical evidence of illegal entry, and performing various checks including farm, building, and traffic patrols. You will operate in covert positions, often utilizing infrared scopes during night operations, to prevent and apprehend smugglers and illegal entrants. This is a career ladder position with progression opportunities from GL-9 to GS-11 and beyond.

Candidates are evaluated based on their resume, supporting documents, and the BPA Entrance Exam. Selected candidates will be detailed to the U.S. Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, New Mexico, for approximately six months of intensive instruction covering immigration laws, law enforcement tactics, firearms, and physical techniques. Proficiency in Spanish is required, and training is provided at the Academy to ensure agents are fully prepared.
Duty assignments are determined at the time of offer based on operational needs and may include prioritized locations along the Southwest Border. While candidates may select preferred locations from a list of mission-critical sectors, assignments may not align with first-choice preferences. Relocation may be required to fulfill the agency's mission needs.
