U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is the nation's premier federal agency charged with securing our borders and protecting our country. As part of a workforce of over 60,000, Border Patrol Agents strive to safeguard the American people by deterring illicit activity and enhancing national economic prosperity. This role offers a unique opportunity to join a team defined by camaraderie, pride, and a shared purpose, working alongside highly trained professionals in the Federal Security and Public Safety sector.
This position is designed for experienced Law Enforcement Officers (LEOs) seeking a career change or a new challenge. Whether your background is in military police units or state and local law enforcement, your prior experience may qualify you for higher-graded opportunities (GL-9 or GS-11). You will be part of a dynamic team where your skills in surveillance, investigation, and apprehension are critical to the daily mission.
The day-to-day reality involves detecting and questioning individuals suspected of violating immigration and customs laws, interpreting tracks and physical evidence of illegal entry, and performing diverse patrols. You will utilize a wide array of government assets—including vehicles, horses, vessels, ATVs, and snowmobiles—to patrol international boundaries and coastal waterways. The role demands sound judgment, the ability to analyze information rapidly, and the capacity to work effectively with informants and the public.
The application process begins by clicking the "Apply" button on the CBP website, which links you to the CBP Talent Network registration page. You will select "Border Patrol Agent" as your Position of Interest and complete pre-screening questions. Following this, you will receive links to the specific Job Opening Announcements (JOAs) on USAJOBS to finalize your application, including the submission of resumes and supporting documents.
Candidates are evaluated based on their resume, supporting documentation, and the BPA Entrance Exam. Selected candidates will be invited to the U.S. Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, New Mexico, for approximately six months of intensive training covering immigration laws, firearms, physical techniques, and Spanish language proficiency.
Duty assignments are determined at the time of offer based on operational needs and may include prioritized locations along the Southwest Border. While candidates can select preferred mission-critical locations from a list of sectors (including Big Bend, El Paso, Tucson, and others), assignments may not align with first-choice preferences. Relocation is often required to meet these operational needs.

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or protected veteran status.
