This is a full-time, career Law Enforcement Officer (LEO) position designed for individuals with prior military police or state/local law enforcement experience. Your prior experience may qualify you for higher-graded opportunities (GL-9 or GS-11), allowing you to make an immediate impact. As a Border Patrol Agent, you will be part of a dynamic environment where your day-to-day work involves detecting and questioning individuals suspected of violating immigration and customs laws, interpreting physical evidence of illegal entry, and conducting patrols across international boundaries and coastal waterways. You will utilize a variety of government assets, including vehicles, horses, vessels, and specialized equipment like infrared scopes, to maintain surveillance and apprehend violators.

Upon selection, successful candidates will attend the U.S. Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, New Mexico, for approximately six months of intensive instruction. Training covers immigration and nationality laws, law enforcement tactics, USBP-specific operations, driver training, physical techniques, and firearms proficiency. While proficiency in Spanish is a requirement for the role, the Academy provides training to help agents become proficient in the language.
Duty assignments are determined at the time of offer based on operational needs and may include prioritized locations along the Southwest Border. While candidates can select preferred mission-critical locations, assignments may not align with first-choice preferences, and relocation may be required. The agency fosters a culture of excellence and service, offering a career ladder with grade level progression from GL-9 to GS-11 to GS-12 upon successful completion of service requirements.
