The U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) is the nation's premier federal agency charged with securing our borders and protecting our country. As part of a workforce of over 60,000, Border Patrol Agents (BPA) strive to safeguard the American people by deterring illicit activity and enhancing the nation's economic prosperity. This role offers a unique opportunity to join a team defined by camaraderie, pride, and a shared sense of purpose.
This is a full-time, career Law Enforcement Officer (LEO) position designed for individuals who love protecting their community and are seeking a change of scenery. Whether your background is in military police or state and local law enforcement, you will work alongside highly trained professionals to execute a critical daily mission.
As a BPA, you will be a valuable member of the Federal Law Enforcement Officer profession. Your day-to-day activities involve detecting and questioning individuals suspected of violating immigration and customs laws, interpreting tracks and physical evidence of illegal entry, and performing various checks including farm, building, and traffic patrols. You will patrol international boundaries and coastal waterways using a diverse array of government assets, from vehicles and horses to off-road vehicles, ATVs, and snowmobiles. The role requires maintaining surveillance from covert positions, including night operations with infrared scopes, and making sound judgments in the use of firearms.
The journey begins with an application through the CBP Talent Network and USAJOBS, followed by an evaluation based on your resume, supporting documents, and the BPA Entrance Exam. Selected candidates will be detailed to the U.S. Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, New Mexico, for approximately six months of intensive instruction. This training covers immigration and nationality laws, law enforcement tactics, driver training, physical techniques, firearms proficiency, and Spanish language skills.
Duty Assignments: Duty assignments are determined at the time of offer based on operational needs and may include prioritized locations along the Southwest Border. Relocation is often required, and candidates should be prepared for assignments that may not align with their first-choice preferences. The agency hires immediately for these career opportunities, offering a clear career ladder progression from GL-9 to GS-11 to GS-12.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection is an equal opportunity employer. We consider qualified applicants regardless of background. Joining the Border Patrol means becoming part of a culture where your prior law enforcement experience is valued, and your contribution to national security is recognized through exceptional benefits, job stability, and competitive incentives.
