About the Mission

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is the nation's premier federal agency charged with securing our borders and protecting our country. As part of a workforce of over 60,000, Border Patrol Agents strive to safeguard the American people by deterring illicit activity and enhancing the nation's economic prosperity. This role offers a unique opportunity to join a team defined by camaraderie, pride, and a shared purpose, working alongside highly trained professionals to protect the community and the nation.

About the Role

This is a full-time, career Law Enforcement Officer (LEO) position designed for individuals passionate about public safety. Whether your background is in military police units or state and local law enforcement, you will have the chance to apply your skills in a dynamic environment. The role involves detecting and questioning individuals suspected of violating immigration and customs laws, preventing the entry of aliens and smugglers through surveillance, and interpreting physical evidence of illegal entry.

Day-to-day operations are diverse and demanding, ranging from farm and building checks to patrolling international boundaries and coastal waterways. Agents utilize a variety of government assets, including vehicles, horses, vessels, ATVs, and snowmobiles, often conducting night operations with infrared scopes. The position requires sound judgment in the use of firearms, the ability to analyze information rapidly, and the capacity to interact with the public courteously while enforcing federal laws.

Hiring and Training Process

Candidates selected for this position will undergo a rigorous selection process. Applications are evaluated based on resumes, supporting documents, and the Border Patrol Agent Entrance Exam. Successful candidates will be invited to the U.S. Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, New Mexico, for approximately six months of intensive instruction. This training covers immigration and nationality laws, law enforcement tactics, driver training, physical techniques, firearms proficiency, and Spanish language acquisition.

Duty assignments are determined at the time of offer based on operational needs and may include prioritized locations along the Southwest Border. Candidates should be prepared for potential relocation. For questions regarding the application process, applicants can contact a recruiter through the U.S. Border Patrol careers page.

Equal Opportunity and Culture

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We are committed to building a diverse workforce that reflects the communities we serve. We consider qualified applicants regardless of background, race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, or genetic information. Joining the Border Patrol means becoming part of a culture where integrity, service, and dedication to the mission are paramount.
