This is a full-time, career Law Enforcement Officer (LEO) position designed for individuals passionate about public safety. Whether your background is in military police units or state and local law enforcement, you will have the chance to apply your skills in a dynamic environment. The role involves detecting and questioning individuals suspected of violating immigration and customs laws, preventing the entry of aliens and smugglers through surveillance, and interpreting physical evidence of illegal entry.
Day-to-day operations are diverse and demanding, ranging from farm and building checks to patrolling international boundaries and coastal waterways. Agents utilize a variety of government assets, including vehicles, horses, vessels, ATVs, and snowmobiles, often conducting night operations with infrared scopes. The position requires sound judgment in the use of firearms, the ability to analyze information rapidly, and the capacity to interact with the public courteously while enforcing federal laws.
Candidates selected for this position will undergo a rigorous selection process. Applications are evaluated based on resumes, supporting documents, and the Border Patrol Agent Entrance Exam. Successful candidates will be invited to the U.S. Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, New Mexico, for approximately six months of intensive instruction. This training covers immigration and nationality laws, law enforcement tactics, driver training, physical techniques, firearms proficiency, and Spanish language acquisition.
Duty assignments are determined at the time of offer based on operational needs and may include prioritized locations along the Southwest Border.
