Founded in 1950 by the Junior League of Miami, the institution began as the Junior Museum of Miami before evolving into the Museum of Science and Natural History. The organization has maintained a continuous presence in the city since 1949, when a committee identified a need for science education for local children. Over the decades, the museum has occupied several facilities, including a historic site at the Vizcaya complex where it secured a 99-year lease in 1989.
The museum serves families, students, and the broader South Florida community through extensive educational programs and exhibits. It hosts over 250,000 visitors annually and supports a summer science camp for children aged 3 to 14. The facility includes a prominent planetarium known for international television programming and houses significant collections. With an operating budget of 2.5 million dollars, the institution accommodates approximately 4,000 member families.
For nearly 50 years, the museum has relied on the dedication of volunteers and contributors to support its mission. The organization continues to expand its facilities to meet the evolving science education needs of the region, maintaining a legacy of civic engagement and community support in Miami.
