The Assistant Project Manager is a primarily technical position designed for individuals with two to five years of experience in consulting structural engineering or similar firms. This role serves as a strategic progression from Engineer positions, requiring the mastery of all foundational skills associated with those roles. It is a project-oriented position where individuals are expected to complete technical portions of smaller projects or significant segments of larger projects with accuracy, completeness, and minimal supervision.
In this capacity, you will be introduced to essential project management skills and tools, utilizing them to drive project success. Your performance will be judged on the accuracy and consistency of your results, as well as the level of independence with which you achieve them. Projects are reviewed intermittently by Senior Project Managers or Principals to ensure alignment with firm standards.
You will generate 3-D Building Information Models (BIM) and structural analysis models using advanced software, often overseeing the production efforts of other technical staff. Your work involves computer-aided and hand-calculated structural analysis, design, and detailing for steel, concrete, masonry, and timber systems. You will coordinate structural designs with architects and other engineering disciplines, preparing complete deliverables including construction documents within the Autodesk REVIT environment.
Beyond technical execution, you will manage the production of accurate calculations, structural plans, and field observation reports. You will also provide management and direction for less experienced staff assigned to your projects, ensuring they adhere to JG's design, BIM modeling, and drawing presentation standards. This role requires you to effectively represent the company in critical client and project situations, including kickoff meetings, coordination meetings, and site visits.
At JG, we value a positive, collaborative environment where employees act as internal champions. We expect team members to display an enthusiastic attitude, treat colleagues with respect, and work to resolve disputes rather than promote them. As a leader in your field, you will be encouraged to provide constructive suggestions to management to help make JG a better place to work. We believe in continuous learning, encouraging staff to voluntarily seek job knowledge outside of office hours through textbooks, manuals, and industry publications.
Candidates for this role must demonstrate mastery of building codes (FBC, IBC), design standards (ASCE-7, ACI-318, AISC), and structural design methodologies. Proficiency in software such as Autodesk REVIT, RAM SS, RAM Concept, and Enercalc is required. The selection process focuses on identifying individuals who can not only produce logical and accurate results but also effectively guide and oversee less experienced technical staff.
