The Assistant Nurse Manager for Emergency Medicine serves as a vital leadership partner within the MCU ED, guiding the direct care nursing functions to ensure the effective and efficient delivery of health services, medical education, and evidence-based research programs. This role exists to bridge the gap between clinical excellence and operational success, fostering a culture where staff are empowered to contribute to unit goals while maintaining the highest standards of patient care.
In this position, you will not only manage the daily operations of the Emergency Department but also actively participate in the planning, organizing, and evaluating of clinical and educational programs. The role demands a dynamic leader who can navigate complex patient acuity, manage multidisciplinary teams, and drive continuous improvement in quality and patient satisfaction. While the focus is on management, the position retains a direct connection to patient care, allowing you to serve as a resource for clinical problems and coordinate care teams on the unit.
Your day will be a blend of strategic oversight and hands-on leadership. You will collaborate with nursing leaders to interpret and implement strategic plans, ensuring that the department's goals align with the broader institutional mission. A significant portion of your time will be dedicated to human resources management, from hiring and performance appraisals to developing succession plans and fostering a respectful, inclusive work environment.
You will also act as a steward of the unit's financial health, analyzing budget variances and developing cost-containment strategies while ensuring fiscal goals are understood by the team. On the clinical side, you will monitor patient volume and acuity, adjusting staffing and priorities to optimize outcomes. Whether you are coaching staff on complex care issues, supporting evidence-based practice research, or ensuring the unit remains survey-ready, your work directly impacts the quality of care delivered to the community.
To be considered for this opportunity, applicants must upload a resume and a cover letter that clearly addresses how their background meets both the required and desired qualifications. The recruitment process may include a request for up to five professional references at a later stage. Successful candidates will be required to self-disclose any conviction history and will be subject to a criminal background check and credential/education verification.
Job openings are posted for a minimum of 14 calendar days, though the position may be filled at any time after this period. For specific questions regarding the application or role, please contact john-hixson@uiowa.edu.
