The University of Tennessee operates as a public land-grant institution and the flagship university of the statewide University of Tennessee system, based in Knoxville. Established in 1794, the university serves a diverse student body of over 26,000 individuals representing all 50 U.S. states and more than 100 foreign nations. The academic structure includes nine undergraduate and eleven graduate departments, offering a wide range of educational programs within the higher education sector. In 2009, U.S. News & World Report recognized the institution as the 118th national university and 52nd among public institutions.
A significant component of the university's research capabilities involves its partnership with Oak Ridge National Laboratory. This collaboration, managed through the UT-Battelle alliance, provides extensive research opportunities for faculty and students that are rare among comparable institutions. The university also maintains affiliations with the Howard H. Baker, Jr. Center for Public Policy, the Anthropological Research Facility, and the Arboretum, a 250-acre site near Oak Ridge featuring hundreds of indigenous plant species.
Furthermore, the University of Tennessee partners directly with the University of Tennessee Medical Center, the sole Level I trauma center in East Tennessee. This medical center functions as a teaching hospital driven by aggressive research programs and serves as the primary career destination for graduates of the University of Tennessee Health Science Center at Memphis.
