The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is located at Tampa General Hospital (TGH) in Tampa, Florida. TGH is a 1,018-bed teaching hospital affiliated with the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine. As a private not-for-profit facility, it stands as one of the most comprehensive medical centers in west central Florida, serving a dozen counties with a population exceeding 4 million.
The 82-bed Jennifer Leigh Muma NICU is a designated Regional Perinatal Intensive Care Center by the State of Florida, committed to delivering the highest level of medical care to premature and sick infants, as well as women with high-risk pregnancies. Beyond being a Level 1 trauma center, the unit operates as a Level 3 NICU and participates in the Florida Perinatal Quality Collaborative, a statewide initiative dedicated to improving maternal and infant health outcomes.
Neonatal services include a dedicated Neonatal Transport Team, a Fetal Care Center, and Whole-Body Cooling capabilities. The team collaborates closely with a wide array of pediatric subspecialties, including Neurology, Neurosurgery, Ophthalmology, ENT, Cardiology, Pulmonology, Gastroenterology, Endocrinology, Hematology/Oncology, Nephrology, and Metabolic Genetics.
The APRN serves as a critical member of the neonatology team, acting in accordance with Florida Statutes for the Nurse Practitioners Act. This role focuses on the care and management of critically ill infants requiring hospitalization in a Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The position covers night and/or day shifts as assigned, including weekend coverage.
In this capacity, the APRN will evaluate and manage neonates and infants, participate in multidisciplinary rounds, and coordinate care with ancillary staff and families. The role involves attending high-risk deliveries to provide immediate stabilization of critically ill neonates under the supervision of the attending Neonatologist. Additionally, the APRN will perform essential procedures such as endotracheal intubation, umbilical line placement, PICC line placement, lumbar punctures, and peripheral arterial lines, while maintaining comprehensive documentation of all orders and progress notes.
As a member of the academic medical center, the APRN also fulfills responsibilities related to teaching, research, service, and administrative activities, including academic advising and representing the university or department.
Candidates must meet university criteria for appointment to the rank of Instructor. The role requires graduation from an accredited Advanced Practice Registered Nurse academic degree program and certification as outlined in Florida Statutes 464 and Florida Administrative Code, Chapter 64.
