The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) brings world-class expertise to the nation's most critical defense, security, space, and science challenges. Our culture is defined by a vibrant, welcoming atmosphere where employees are encouraged to bring their authentic selves to work, grow continuously, and build strong connections with inspiring teammates. We celebrate diverse perspectives and foster an environment that encourages creativity and bold, new ideas.
Our Chemistry Group is dedicated to solving real-world problems through hands-on experimental chemistry. We pride ourselves on close collaboration, technical rigor, and delivering direct impact on national security and environmental resilience challenges. Our work spans a wide range of projects, from adhesive formulations and surface coatings to energetics, environmental assessments, and materials degradation.
We are seeking an Analytical Chemist to support and lead experimental investigations that bridge chemistry and engineering. In this role, you will utilize state-of-the-art instrumentation and experimental techniques to generate critical data needed to evaluate and transition chemical technologies and novel materials. You will be part of a team that thrives in a research laboratory setting, tackling complex challenges that span chemical characterization, formulation testing, environmental sampling, and the development of novel analytical methods.
Day-to-day, you will perform hands-on laboratory testing and characterization using techniques such as gas chromatography (GC), liquid chromatography (LC), and mass spectrometry (MS). You will develop and optimize non-traditional analytical methods for sample characterization across diverse applications, ensuring accurate data collection through the maintenance and troubleshooting of laboratory instrumentation. Beyond the bench, you will analyze and interpret results, communicating findings clearly in technical reports and briefings to support proposal efforts and the growth of our research portfolio.
At APL, we offer a robust benefits package including generous retirement contributions, a healthy work/life balance, and a comprehensive education assistance program. Our campus is located in the Baltimore-Washington metro area, providing a dynamic environment for professional and personal development.
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility for this position includes U.S. citizenship.
