This position serves as an Air Reserve Technician (ART) Officer at the 459th Operations Group, holding the military rank of O-5 (Lieutenant Colonel). The primary purpose of this role is to perform pilot and pilot-in-command duties in assigned aircraft while simultaneously managing squadron operations, combat mission planning, and training programs. The incumbent acts as a bridge between active duty and Reserve forces, ensuring the highest level of combat mission-ready proficiency across the unit.
The day-to-day responsibilities involve a dynamic mix of flight operations and instructional leadership. You will conduct full-cycle training for aircrew members, ranging from theory and classroom instruction to actual flight practice in combat tactics, weapons delivery, aerial reconnaissance, search and rescue, and air drop operations. As a flight instructor, you are responsible for demonstrating proper execution of duties and ensuring the safe performance of students during flight.
Beyond the cockpit and classroom, this role requires active participation in unit mission planning and representation. You will analyze training objectives to develop effective programs, serve on panels and committees regarding flying operations, and deliver briefings to staff and key personnel. As an ART officer, you also represent the Air Force Reserve to the public, dignitaries, and high-ranking personnel during official visits and duties both at and away from the home station.
This is a specialized Air Reserve Technician Officer position. Candidates must be U.S. citizens and either current members of the Air Force Reserves or qualified to join. While retired military personnel are generally ineligible for Reserve membership, those with active Air Force Reserve assignments may apply if they can document their current position and unit on their application.
Applicants must demonstrate eligibility through official documentation, including logbooks, orders, or flying hour reports verifying their status as a rated military pilot, flight instructor, or flight examiner. Specific flight hour requirements apply based on the aircraft type and role (e.g., 1,000 total pilot time for GS-13 eligibility), with specific credit rules for fighter jet and training aircraft hours.
Selected candidates will be subject to a security clearance process and may be required to sign a mobility agreement. The position involves shift work, emergency overtime, and the potential for random drug testing. Employment is subject to a probationary or trial period (1 or 2 years), after which continued employment requires certification that it advances the public interest.
Federal employees, including those eligible for the Interagency Career Transition Assistance Program (ICTAP) or Military Spouse Preference (MSP), may apply with specific documentation requirements. MSP applicants must submit a completed DD Form 3145-4 to verify eligibility. All federal employees are required to have direct deposit, and relocation or recruitment incentives may be authorized depending on the specific needs of the position.
