Founded in 1895, Union Settlement is an East Harlem-based nonprofit and a pioneer of the settlement house movement. For over 128 years, we have provided critical and innovative programming to children, youth, families, and older adults. Today, our organization operates through 33 program sites across approximately 28 locations, serving more than 10,000 individuals and nearly 1,000 businesses annually.
Strengthened by a dynamic, diverse, and collaborative workforce of over 350 employees, Union Settlement acts as a connector, convener, and advocate for East Harlem. Our mission is to empower New Yorkers to gain opportunities, develop skills, and achieve their dreams through our core programs in Early Childhood Education, Youth Services, Family Services, Adult Education, Mental Health, Older Adult Centers, and Economic Development.
The Activity Specialist is a vital part of the Youth Development & Opportunity department, dedicated to fostering a safe and enriching environment for afterschool participants. This role exists to provide young people with access to opportunities they might otherwise miss, including specialized high school prep, arts enrichment, computer classes, and consistent physical education.
In this position, you will be the face of our creative and educational programs, facilitating activities in organized sports, performing arts, STEM, visual arts, and leadership. Your day involves creating a workshop environment conducive to learning and mastery, leading project-based activities, and preparing participants for quarterly showcases. Beyond instruction, you will serve as a mentor and guide, helping students build self-confidence, broaden their worldviews, and engage deeply with their schools and community. You will also maintain strong connections with families by contacting parents weekly with positive updates and ensuring students are safely escorted home after each session.
Interested candidates are invited to apply directly through our careers portal. The selection process typically includes a review of qualifications, followed by an interview with the Program Director to discuss your experience and fit within our team. Successful candidates will be notified regarding next steps and potential start dates.
