The Accountant (Finance) serves as a vital link between the city's financial operations and the public. This full-time position supports the Finance department by managing core accounting functions, ensuring accurate financial reporting, and maintaining transparency for staff, elected officials, and citizens. The role is designed to uphold fiscal integrity while providing responsive service to the community.
Your work will center on the precision of the general ledger. You will prepare monthly and quarterly journal entries, reconcile accounts, and manage the import of procurement card activity. A significant portion of your time will be dedicated to billing and collections, whether handling general billing, special assessments, or utility invoices. You will identify delinquent charges, monitor collection activities, and work with vendors to ensure accurate billing generation.
Depending on operational needs, you will also support payroll processing or utility billing services. In payroll, you will assist with time-data entry, maintain wage and benefit tables, and reconcile deduction accounts. In utility billing, you will manage water meter data imports, handle customer records, and process ACH payments. Beyond daily transactions, you will assist with year-end closings, audit schedules, and the preparation of complex reports for the Sewer and Water Board, Public Service Commission, and the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report.
You will also serve as a point of contact for inquiries from attorneys, title companies, and the public regarding real estate closings, bankruptcy cases, and billing disputes. The role requires you to investigate issues, resolve citizen complaints, and train department staff on financial procedures and policies.
Candidates meeting the minimum qualifications of an Associate's degree in Accounting and three years of relevant experience are encouraged to apply. Equivalent combinations of training and experience will be considered. The selection process will evaluate candidates based on their technical accounting skills, public sector experience, and ability to manage sensitive financial data.
