City Year is an AmeriCorps program dedicated to helping students across schools succeed. Our teams of AmeriCorps members provide comprehensive support to students, classrooms, and the entire school community. Our mission is to ensure that students receive a high-quality education that equips them with the necessary skills and mindset to thrive and contribute to their communities.
As a Student Success Coach and Mentor, your service will focus on coaching and mentoring elementary, middle, and/or high school students. You will help these students achieve academic success, improve their attendance, and develop positive behaviors at school. This role involves planning and monitoring individual student progress while collaborating with teachers on whole-class instruction, breakout spaces, and in-class student assistance.
You will work one-on-one and in small groups to develop literacy and math skills, tailoring learning activities to student levels. You will also create and implement behavior management systems and foster interpersonal skills through proven strategies of learning, practice, reflection, and repetition. In collaboration with teachers, you will help create an engaging, safe, and healthy classroom environment.
Beyond the classroom, you will support whole-school initiatives to increase engagement with students and families. This includes conducting extended day and virtual programming before, during, and after school, such as academic enrichment, homework support, recreation, student clubs, service learning, and leadership development. You may also co-lead events that recognize and appreciate student growth in math, literacy, attendance, and behavior.
No prior experience in these specific tasks is required. City Year provides 2-4 weeks of training at the beginning of the year to support you, and you will work with partner teachers and school staff every step of the way.
