City Year is an AmeriCorps program dedicated to helping students across schools succeed. Our teams of AmeriCorps members provide comprehensive support to students, classrooms, and the entire school community. Our mission is to ensure that students receive a high-quality education that equips them with the skills and mindset necessary to thrive and contribute meaningfully to their communities.
As a Student Success Coach and Mentor, you will serve as a City Year AmeriCorps Member, focusing on coaching and mentoring elementary, middle, and/or high school students. Your service is designed to help students achieve academic success, improve attendance, and develop positive behaviors at school.
You will plan and monitor individual student progress while collaborating closely with teachers on whole-class instruction, breakout spaces, and in-class student assistance. This role is not just about executing tasks; it is about building relationships and fostering growth. You will work one-on-one and in small groups to develop literacy and math skills, create engaging behavior management systems, and cultivate interpersonal skills through proven strategies of learning, practice, and reflection.
While prior experience in these specific tasks is not required, you will be supported by 2-4 weeks of training at the beginning of the year. You will work alongside partner teachers and school staff every step of the way to create a safe, healthy, and engaging classroom environment. Additionally, you will support whole-school initiatives to increase engagement with students and families through extended day programming, academic enrichment, homework support, and leadership development events.
