City Year is an AmeriCorps program dedicated to helping students across schools succeed. Our teams of AmeriCorps members provide comprehensive support to students, classrooms, and the entire school community. Our mission is to ensure that students receive a high-quality education that prepares them with the skills and mindset to thrive and contribute to their communities.
As a Student Success Coach and Mentor, you will serve as a City Year AmeriCorps Member, focusing on coaching and mentoring elementary, middle, and/or high school students. Your service is designed to help students earn academic success, improve attendance, and develop positive behaviors at school.
You will plan and monitor individual student progress while working closely with teachers on whole-class instruction, breakout spaces, and in-class student assistance. This role is not just about executing tasks; it is about building relationships and fostering growth. You will work with identified students one-on-one and in small groups, developing literacy and math skills tailored to their levels. By creating and implementing behavior management systems and using proven strategies of learning, practice, reflection, and repetition, you will help students develop essential interpersonal skills.
Beyond the classroom, you will support whole-school initiatives to increase engagement with students and families. This includes conducting extended day and virtual programming before, during, and after school, ranging from academic enrichment and homework support to recreation, student clubs, and leadership development. You will also help create and co-lead events that recognize and celebrate student growth in math, literacy, attendance, and behavior.
We understand that experience in all these tasks is not necessary. To support you, we provide 2-4 weeks of training at the beginning of the year. Throughout your service, you will work alongside partner teachers and school staff every step of the way.
