About the Role
As a Student Success Coach and Mentor, you will serve as a City Year AmeriCorps Member, focusing on coaching and mentoring elementary, middle, and/or high school students. Your service is designed to help students achieve academic success, improve attendance, and develop positive behaviors at school.
You will plan and monitor individual student progress while collaborating closely with teachers on whole-class instruction, breakout spaces, and in-class student assistance. This role is not just about executing tasks; it is about building relationships and fostering growth. You will work one-on-one and in small groups to develop literacy and math skills, create engaging behavior management systems, and cultivate interpersonal skills through proven strategies of learning, practice, reflection, and repetition.
Beyond the classroom, you will support whole-school initiatives to increase engagement with students and families. This includes leading extended day and virtual programming, organizing academic enrichment, and co-leading events that celebrate student growth in math, literacy, attendance, and behavior. You will help create an engaging, safe, and healthy classroom environment in collaboration with school staff.
Training and Support
You do not need prior experience in all these tasks to succeed. City Year provides 2–4 weeks of comprehensive training at the beginning of the year to prepare you for your service. Throughout your term, you will work alongside partner teachers and school staff every step of the way, ensuring you have the support needed to make a lasting impact.
