The Diversion Specialist serves as a pivotal component of Onondaga County's Person in Crisis (PIC) Navigation Program. This position provides immediate mental health support and crisis intervention to individuals in distress who contact Onondaga County 911. The role is crucial in ensuring that individuals experiencing mental health or substance use crises receive appropriate care and support, bridging the gap between emergency services and community resources.
Depending on operational needs, this position may function as either a 911 Crisis Counselor or a PIC Coordinator at the Onondaga County E-911 Center. As a Crisis Counselor, you will respond to 911 calls involving mental health and substance use crises, conducting initial assessments and developing tailored intervention plans. As a PIC Coordinator, you will prioritize and dispatch human service responses, monitoring ongoing situations and facilitating coordination between the person in crisis, community response teams, law enforcement, and EMS.
Beyond the E-911 center, you may also act as a call center Crisis Specialist responding to 988, 211, and community crisis lines. The role requires maintaining accurate documentation in both the E-911 CAD system and Contact's iCarol system while adhering to strict confidentiality and ethical guidelines.
Initial training for this position is expected to take 3 to 4 months. Training will occur Monday through Friday, 11 am to 7 pm, on-site at Contact's main office and the Onondaga County E-911 center. Successful completion of a standardized training program is required, adhering to Inform USA and American Association of Suicidology accreditation standards.
Work schedules are determined based on call volume trends and may include holidays and weekends. Most staff work Saturday or Sunday, and some work both days. The position is designated as essential staff; employees must report to work for their regular shift even if the business office is closed due to an emergency.
Differentials:
Candidates must submit to and pass background checks, including fingerprinting and educational verification. You will be required to pass AAS Crisis Specialist and Inform USA Community Resource Specialist certification exams as soon as eligible.
