The Work Crew I serves as the foundational support for harbor construction and maintenance operations in Chicago. This non-exempt position is vital to ensuring the safety and functionality of our maritime infrastructure, working directly under the direction of the Work Crew Supervisor or Operations Manager.
In this role, you will be an active participant in a variety of essential tasks, ranging from harbor construction and demolition to seasonal winterization of docks. Your day-to-day responsibilities include the installation and removal of buoys, maintaining bubbler and ice prevention systems, and performing general repair projects. Success in this position requires a strong commitment to maritime safety practices and the ability to operate marine equipment, including tugs and other vessels, with precision.
Candidates for this position should possess a High School Diploma or equivalent, along with one to two years of minimum work experience, preferably in basic construction. While specific supplemental training in welding, carpentry, equipment operation, and general maintenance may be required, the ideal candidate demonstrates a foundational knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic systems, as well as mobile and stationary pump-out systems.
Physical readiness is a key component of this role. You must be capable of lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds and working outdoors in all weather conditions. Flexibility is also essential, as the role may require varied hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
