At the Nebraska Humane Society (NHS), the Animal Medical Department is dedicated to enhancing the lives of animals by preparing them for adoption and bringing justice to victims of cruelty. Our mission extends to alleviating suffering through compassionate care, working in close partnership with colleagues to ensure every animal receives the highest standard of medical attention.
As a Veterinary Technician II, you will provide essential veterinary medical and surgical nursing skills with a specialized focus on shelter medicine. This role is pivotal in our daily operations, where you will partner with veterinarians to prepare animals for their new homes while supporting the emotional well-being of the shelter community.
Your day-to-day involves a dynamic blend of clinical care and compassionate support. You will perform medication rounds, administer vaccines and pain management, and assist in disease surveillance. A significant part of your work includes performing diagnostics such as digital radiographs, fecal exams, and blood panels to ensure accurate medical records. You will also play a key role in surgical support, from inducing anesthesia and intubating patients to monitoring recovery and assisting in emergency triage.
This position requires emotional resilience and a deep commitment to animal welfare. You will rotate one day per week through euthanasia services to provide a safe and humane end-of-life experience for shelter animals, and you may periodically rotate through the NHS Spay & Neuter Center. Additionally, you will serve as a resource for adopters, answering medical questions before and after adoption, and you will help train new staff, volunteers, and veterinary students.
New hires will be offered a $2,500 sign-on bonus. To apply, please ensure you meet the required qualifications, including an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Veterinary Technology from an accredited program and a valid license in the state of Nebraska. Candidates currently licensed in another state with shelter or rescue experience are encouraged to apply, provided they can obtain a Nebraska license.
The Nebraska Humane Society is committed to a diverse and inclusive workforce. We consider qualified applicants regardless of background and strive to maintain a culture of compassion, respect, and dignity for all. We are dedicated to providing a supportive environment where employees can thrive while caring for animals.

Nebraska Humane Society, headquartered in Omaha, NE, operates within the non-profit organizations sector as the fifth oldest Humane Society in the United States. Following the mid-1940s shift where state agencies assumed child welfare responsibilities, the organization became the sole entity in the Omaha area dedicated to animal protection.
The organization focuses on providing education, offering sanctuary to animals, encouraging adoptions, and promoting responsible pet ownership. Through the provision of animal control services across much of the metro area, it serves the citizens of the community by enforcing laws designed to protect both people and animals. This long-standing commitment to public safety and animal welfare continues to define its operational scope in the region.
