The UT College of Veterinary Medicine (UTCVM), located in Knoxville, was established by an act of the Tennessee Legislature in 1974. As part of the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture, UTCVM is one of 33 veterinary colleges in the United States. The college serves Tennessee students, pet owners, and the livestock industry while protecting public health, enhancing medical knowledge, and generating economic benefits to the state and nation.
The Veterinary Assistant position within the Small Animal Clinical Sciences department is essential to the overall well-being of animals under care. This role provides quality care for patients and research animals through a variety of daily functions. The Veterinary Medical Center operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, meaning occasional weekend, evening, or holiday work may be required.
Multiple positions are available, including opportunities in Emergency & Critical Care and rotating shifts. The day-to-day responsibilities involve feeding, bathing, exercising, and restraining animals for physical exams and medical procedures. Assistants prepare cages and runs, manage supplies, perform cleaning and disinfection, and collect and disperse laundry. The role also includes creating enrichment devices, recording daily observations, and assisting with patient admittance and discharge.
Depending on experience and qualifications, successful candidates will be hired into one of four levels: Veterinary Assistant 1, Veterinary Assistant 2, Senior Veterinary Assistant 1, or Senior Veterinary Assistant 2. These levels reflect progressing knowledge in small animal care, behavior, monitoring, handling, and the use of hospital equipment.
