The Financial Assistance Program (FAP) is a specialized initiative by the Department of the Navy designed to support physicians and dentists currently in residency training for critical medical or dental specialties. This program provides substantial financial assistance during your residency in exchange for a commitment to serve as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Navy's medical team upon completion of your training.
Upon completing your residency, you will transition into an active-duty Navy physician or dentist. Your mission will be to deliver high-quality care in high-demand specialty areas, directly supporting the health and readiness of the Navy and its personnel. This role represents a unique opportunity to combine advanced medical expertise with a dedicated military career.
To participate in the FAP, applicants must be U.S. citizens (dual citizenship is not permitted) and physically qualified for a commission in the U.S. Navy. A key requirement is acceptance into an accredited residency training program in a critical specialty area identified as needed by the Navy.
Scholarship recipients incur a minimum Active Duty Service Obligation (ADSO). The obligation is calculated as two years, or one-half year for each half year (or portion thereof) of FAP sponsorship, whichever is greater. For example, one to two years of sponsorship results in a 2-year ADSO, while three years of sponsorship results in a 3-year ADSO.
Scholarships are awarded on a rolling basis, and applications are accepted throughout the year. The application process typically takes 12 to 16 weeks to complete. Candidates entering or currently in a critical medical or dental residency are encouraged to apply as soon as possible to secure their position.
