American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Orthopedics & Trauma unit at a Level I Trauma Center in Omaha, Nebraska. This 13-week assignment focuses on a high-volume, high-turnover patient population with multiple admissions and discharges daily. The unit is located on the 4th Floor (North & South) and consists of 55 beds.
You will care for a diverse patient population including joint replacements, fractures, colon resections, COPD exacerbation, prostatectomy, cellulitis, sepsis, ortho trauma, GI bleeds, pneumonia, and failure to thrive. The patient demographic includes Spanish-, Karen-, and Burmese-speaking individuals. As part of the team, you will be expected to titrate Heparin, lidocaine, and ketamine drips, manage PCA pumps, and maintain basic telemetry awareness. Mechanical lifts are available in every other room, and hourly rounding is a strong focus of this unit.
The role requires a nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:5-6, with PCTs available at a 1:10-20 ratio. You will work 12-hour day shifts (0630-1900), typically every other weekend, with potential for additional coverage based on department need. Floating to other Med/Surg areas or units holding Med/Surg patients is required. A charge nurse is present on each shift and carries an assignment.
Candidates must reside more than 50 miles from the facility, verified by a driver's license. The selection process requires two professional references: one supervisor from within the last 12 months and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years, including dates of employment and eligibility for rehire.
Successful candidates will undergo a unit orientation consisting of 2 days of department-specific training, followed by a pass/fail open-book exam on the first Friday of orientation. A score of 90% or higher is required to continue. Schedules are posted 6 weeks in advance, with a limited amount of block scheduling potentially approved. RTO (Request to Off) must be requested upfront, with a maximum of 7 days per 13-week contract.
American Traveler is an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity and inclusion. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds.
