The Transportation Worker 2 Equipment Operator serves as a vital member of the West Virginia Department of Transportation (WVDOT), supporting the planning, construction, maintenance, and regulation of over 35,000 miles of state roads. Reporting to the Summers County Headquarters, this position operates under general supervision to perform full-performance level skilled work in highway maintenance.
This role is designed for individuals ready to launch a career through a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program. Progression within the program is driven by completed hours, demonstrated proficiency, and training milestones, with a requirement to maintain or obtain a Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
As an Equipment Operator, you will be the hands-on force behind keeping West Virginia's infrastructure safe and functional. Your day involves operating a variety of motorized highway maintenance equipment, including skid steers, utility tractors, aerial bucket trucks, front-end loaders, tandem-axle trucks, and snowplows. You will be responsible for major repairs to highways, culverts, and bridge structures, as well as patching cement, pavement, and bridge decks.
Beyond heavy machinery, your duties include performing minor mechanical repairs in the field, such as changing tires, blades, or filters, and conducting routine maintenance like cleaning, lubricating, and checking fluid levels. You will also manage traffic control by flagging and erecting signs and barricades on construction sites. The work is physically demanding and may require shoveling materials, cleaning culverts, mowing, and brush cutting.
This position demands adaptability and resilience. You may be exposed to hazardous working conditions and inclement weather. The nature of highway maintenance often necessitates irregular hours, shifts, weekends, and overtime exceeding 40 hours per week, sometimes without prior notice. A valid driver's license is required for travel between job sites, and the role may require certification in specific areas after employment begins.
The WVDOT is an equal opportunity employer committed to building a diverse workforce. We consider qualified applicants regardless of background, race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status.
