About the Team

Western Massachusetts Hospital, part of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH), serves as the only public hospital in the western region of Massachusetts. We operate as a critical medical safety net for uninsured and under-insured residents, providing acute and chronic care to patients with complex conditions ranging from cardiac and pulmonary diseases to dementia and terminal illnesses. Our mission is to deliver high-quality care in a long-term care setting where familiar faces are the norm, maintaining a high staff-to-patient ratio to ensure optimal well-being for all.

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health is dedicated to preventing illness, injury, and premature death while promoting wellness and health equity for all people in the Commonwealth. We envision a Commonwealth where all people enjoy optimal health, centering those with systemically and culturally oppressed identities and circumstances.

About the Role

We are seeking a motivated Trades Worker to contribute directly to the upkeep and improvement of our buildings and infrastructure. This role is designed for individuals who take pride in practical problem-solving, value teamwork, and are eager to build their skills while maintaining the functionality and safety of critical facilities.

As a Trades Worker, you will be an active partner to skilled tradespeople across multiple disciplines, including carpentry, electrical, HVAC, plumbing, and masonry. Your day-to-day will involve a dynamic mix of hands-on tasks, from setting up scaffolding and operating maintenance vehicles to performing preventive maintenance on motors, boilers, and heat exchangers. No two days are the same; you will transition between large-scale projects and smaller, independent repair assignments, ensuring that our facilities remain safe and operational around the clock.

This position offers a rewarding environment for those who enjoy physical activity and technical work. You will learn from seasoned professionals while contributing to a team that keeps operations running smoothly. Participation in maintenance stand-by duties ensures you are part of a continuous cycle of care and improvement.

Hiring Process & Application

First consideration will be given to applicants who apply within the first 14 days of the posting.

Pre-Offer Process: A criminal background check will be completed on the recommended candidate as required by regulations set forth by the Executive Office of Health and Human Services prior to hiring. Education, licensure, and certifications will be verified in accordance with Human Resources Division guidelines. Selected candidates must acknowledge and attest to their COVID-19 and Influenza vaccination status, as required by Title 101 CMR 23.00 for State Hospitals.

Accommodations: If you require a reasonable accommodation with the application or interview process, please contact us via the EOHHS Candidate ADA Requests channel. For general questions, please contact Human Resources at 1-800-510-4122, Option 4.

Equal Opportunity & Culture

The Commonwealth is an Equal Opportunity Employer and does not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, sex, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, age, disability, national origin, veteran status, or any other basis covered by appropriate law. Females, minorities, veterans, and persons with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply.

Research suggests that qualified women, Black, Indigenous, and Persons of Color (BIPOC) may self-select out of opportunities if they feel they do not meet 100% of the job requirements. We encourage individuals who believe they have the skills necessary to thrive to apply for this role. We are committed to creating a work experience that supports you, your loved ones, and your future.
