The RISE (Reaching Independence through Structured Environments) program at Stoneham Middle School is a multi-tiered initiative designed to support students with diverse needs. The program serves a community of learners who present challenges in social thinking, self-awareness, executive functioning, perspective-taking, and emotional and sensory regulation.
The mission of RISE is to ensure a supportive, cohesive, and challenging middle school learning environment for students who exhibit difficulties with academics, social thinking, executive functioning, and emotional regulation. Students in the program receive intensive academic, social, emotional, and communication support, primarily within a substantially separate special education classroom. The program infuses principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), focusing on reinforcement systems and consistent behavior management.
The RISE program operates as a cohesive unit supported by a robust interdisciplinary team. In addition to the special education teacher, the team includes several paraprofessionals, a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), a speech/language pathologist, an occupational therapist, a physical therapist, a school adjustment counselor, and a psychologist. The BCBA provides ongoing training on ABA methodologies and consults with all staff, while the counselor and psychologist offer support and community outreach to families.
The program strives for cohesion by collaborating with individuals to approach goals in a variety of settings, promoting the generalization of skills. Student goals center on increased abilities in academics, recreation, social interaction, communication, self-care, motor skills, and behavior management, with a strong emphasis on flexibility and self-advocacy.
Inclusion opportunities are structured for each student based on their specific areas of strength and need. Typically, students are included in the broader school community for socialization, providing opportunities to practice social interactions and communication in natural situations. Participation in core curriculum classrooms is determined individually, often focusing on one academic area at a time with a gradual increase in time or activities across the school year. Special classes such as art, physical education, and music may take place in either a specialized classroom or an inclusion setting.
