About the Role
The Southern New England Regional Trails Supervisor serves as a vital steward for the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC), developing and sustaining trails management programs across central and western Massachusetts and northwestern Connecticut. This position is pivotal to advancing AMC's Vision 2020 goals by expanding volunteerism and engaging youth in the outdoors through the management of the Appalachian Trail Ridgerunner Program and the Southern New England Teen Trail Crew Program.
Working from the Kellogg Conservation Center in South Egremont, MA, the Supervisor acts as a regional ambassador, fostering partnerships with the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, state agencies, local land trusts, and conservation organizations. The role blends traditional trail maintenance expertise with contemporary backcountry recreation management, requiring a deep familiarity with Leave No Trace principles. Beyond technical trail work, the Supervisor will drive program growth by developing new partnerships in the Berkshire and Pioneer Valley regions and serving as a resource for local organizations launching new trail projects.

Key Responsibilities
- check_circleManage AMC's Southern New England Teen Trail Crew and Custom Crews including hiring, training, and supervising staff
- check_circleCoordinate with state agencies and volunteer committees to plan priority trail and backcountry campsite projects
- check_circleSeek funding for priority projects and assist in writing grant applications and supporting materials
- check_circleOrganize and lead skills trainings for trail volunteers throughout Connecticut and Massachusetts
- check_circleServe as a trail resource for local organizations developing new trail projects or maintenance programs
- check_circleCollaborate with the Appalachian Trail Conservancy for programming and facility needs at the Kellogg Conservation Center
- check_circleOversee the Southern New England Ridgerunner Program including staff supervision and trail use data collection
- check_circleCompile annual reports on participant enrollment, work hours, and accomplishments for partners
- check_circleEnsure critical program policies are followed to reduce risk to participants and staff
- check_circleManage program expenses, track credit card costs, and oversee vehicle fleet maintenance
Requirements
- verifiedMinimum 2-4 years of trail maintenance, construction, or natural resource management experience
- verifiedBachelor's degree in Recreation, Natural Resources Management, or related field (desirable)
- verifiedValid driver's license with acceptable driving history
- verifiedWilderness First Aid and CPR certification (or willingness to obtain)
- verifiedCriminal background check (contingent on employment)
