DreamYard Project is committed to being an anti-racist organization. We lead with race because we operate in a country founded on the genocide of Indigenous people, the enslavement of African people, and the oppression of countless others. We acknowledge the role this history plays in perpetuating inequity and dominant white culture. We are intentionally building a path toward racial equity by challenging oppression, using art and education as a platform for a hopeful vision of the future, and uplifting the cultural assets within our community.
Founded in 1994 by Co-Executive Directors Jason Duchin and Tim Lord, DreamYard has spent a quarter century working with over 100 public schools and 100,000 young people and families. We have developed a robust educational community in the Bronx, ranging from in-school partnerships to the DreamYard Preparatory High School and our Out of School Programs at the DreamYard Art Center in Morrisania. Our role is to nurture, resource, encourage, and inspire our community members, reminding them of their power and endless possibilities. We do this by encouraging personal stories, acknowledging and working to change oppressive conditions, and fortifying each individual's personal power to transform.
The SONYC Group Leader will report to the SONYC Program Director and work closely with staff to support the SONYC after-school program at MS 390 in the Bronx. This role serves as a vital link in our educational community, supporting 120 students with a primary focus on a specific group of 15. The Group Leader acts as a positive role model and mentor, fostering a supportive culture and developing effective strategies for engaging with students.
The position involves leading multiple hour-long sessions within a sequential curriculum, creating written lesson plans, and supporting program goals around attendance and engagement. It is essential that the Group Leader creates a positive, productive environment that reflects DreamYard's values of justice, unity, equity, creativity, and joy. The program site is located at 1930 Andrews Avenue South, Bronx, NY 10453.
