The Shift Lead at Banfield Pet Hospital serves as a vital bridge between clinical excellence and operational efficiency. This unique position is designed to ensure continuity of care and leadership presence across all shifts, even when the Practice Manager or Chief of Staff are not onsite. By balancing hands-on veterinary support with team guidance, the Shift Lead helps maximize the hospital's productivity and profitability while maintaining the highest standards of client service.
In this role, you will live and exemplify the Five Principles of Mars, Inc.: Quality, Responsibility, Mutuality, Efficiency, and Freedom. You will act as the extra eyes, ears, and hands for veterinarians and technicians, ensuring that pets receive world-class preventive care and that clients feel welcomed and informed. Whether you are managing the flow of patients, educating owners on wellness plans, or mentoring new associates, your goal is to foster an environment where the team thrives and delivers exceptional results.
Your day will be a dynamic mix of clinical duties and leadership responsibilities. Approximately 80% of your time is dedicated to paraprofessional tasks, such as welcoming clients, managing patient flow, performing medical procedures within state guidelines, and ensuring treatment areas remain sterile and organized. You will actively recruit new clients, manage finances, and assist with surgeries, all while maintaining accurate medical records.
The remaining 20% of your time focuses on leadership. You will support the Practice Manager in labor management, assist in training and supervising the paraprofessional team, and resolve client issues. You will triage the treatment board, ensure cases are assigned clearly, and identify operational bottlenecks to keep the hospital running smoothly. This role requires the ability to pivot quickly between clinical care and team coordination, using good judgment to prioritize tasks based on the hospital's immediate needs.
