The Senior Building Inspector serves as a senior-level tradesperson and essential personnel within the Building Department. This position is designed to perform complex technical and administrative work, ensuring that development operations across the City strictly conform to all approved building plans, specifications, and regulatory requirements.
As a key member of the team, you will act as a bridge between the City's regulatory standards and the construction industry. Your role involves systematic site inspections of skilled trades work for both new and existing construction projects. You will verify compliance with city, county, state, and federal codes, reviewing blueprints and specifications to ensure structural integrity and safety. Beyond technical review, you will collaborate with a diverse network of stakeholders—including independent contractors, subcontractors, engineers, architects, and homeowners—to facilitate the permitting process and resolve code violations.
This role requires a proactive approach to public safety. You will have the authority to order the exposure of building portions for inspection, halt construction, or vacate buildings when occupancy violates established regulations. Additionally, you will serve as an educator and enforcer, meeting with violators to explain code requirements and advising on correction timeframes. The position also involves maintaining detailed records of inspection activities, testifying in court or before boards regarding structural issues, and recommending cost-control measures to ensure efficient departmental service delivery.
