Residence in the City of Buffalo is mandatory for all positions. Applicants must demonstrate ninety (90) days of continuous and uninterrupted residence in the City prior to filing, unless applying for the Buffalo Police Entry Level Examination. City ordinances mandate continuous residency throughout employment, with exceptions only for positions specifically exempt under state law.

This position involves independently performing difficult and responsible accounting work across a variety of assignments while directing the work of others. The role operates under general supervision, adhering to outlined objectives, policies, and detailed procedures. While technical or policy matters are typically referred to a supervisor for decision-making, the incumbent exercises supervision over assigned accounting and/or clerical personnel.
The incumbent performs general accounting tasks, including the preparation and posting of journal entries to subsidiary ledgers and the reconciliation of daily and monthly reports for receipts, disbursements, payroll, and departmental revenue. Key responsibilities include reconciling bank statements, maintaining records for public utility tax reports, the Employees Retirement System, and city-owned real estate, and managing fixed inventory records. The role also involves determining account numbers for new revenues, assisting with grant report filings, preparing financial schedules for auditors, and maintaining vendor files for tax reporting. Additionally, the incumbent pre-audits purchase orders and contracts for legality and price, and pre-audits repair and construction work orders.
