The Armed Security Officer is responsible for providing a physically safe and secure environment for patients, visitors, and employees across Sentara Hospitals and Free-standing Emergency Departments. This role requires the ability to exercise significant discretion regarding the use of weapons, utilizing them only in times of extreme attack when all non-violent options have been exhausted.
In this position, you will actively monitor Concealed Weapons Detection Systems at division entrances, securing weapons for safekeeping when necessary. Your day-to-day duties include patrolling the campus, monitoring activity in and around buildings and grounds, and responding appropriately to both routine and emergency situations. You will also perform camera surveillance, maintain department logs and records, and utilize computer skills to document daily activities and conduct security investigations. The role demands evaluating situations and taking professional, timely steps for resolution.
To ensure the highest standards of safety and security for our patients and team members, all candidates must meet specific fitness and certification criteria. This includes passing a Fit for Duty assessment and a Psychological Evaluation and Assessment conducted by a Sentara-selected service provider. Successful candidates must obtain a Virginia DCJS – Armed Officer Certificate and a Certified Healthcare Security Officer (CHSO) certification within 90 days of hire.
