The R/V Seawolf Deckhand serves as a vital support member for the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences at Stony Brook University. This position is dedicated to facilitating the success of faculty, staff, students, and scientific parties aboard the R/V Seawolf. The role blends hands-on vessel maintenance with direct assistance to research operations, ensuring that the ship and its facilities remain in efficient operating capacity while scientific missions are executed safely and optimally.
In this capacity, you will share responsibility for the day-to-day operational needs of the vessel. Your day-to-day life will involve a dynamic mix of onshore and at-sea duties, ranging from routine maintenance and minor repairs to the precise calibration, handling, and deployment of oceanographic equipment. You will act as a bridge between the technical needs of the ship and the scientific goals of the research parties, assisting with the handling of experimental materials and animals. Success in this role requires a collaborative approach to problem-solving, the ability to work independently, and strong organizational skills to manage fieldwork in varying conditions.
You will be joining a team committed to excellence in diversity and the creation of an inclusive learning and working environment. The R/V Seawolf operates as a critical platform for oceanographic research and education, and your contribution ensures that these missions can proceed without interruption. Whether you are standing a navigational watch, serving as the ship's cook for the crew and science party, or maintaining the boathouse facilities, your work directly supports the university's broader mission of advancing marine science.

This is a full-time, FLSA Non-Exempt position that requires extensive periods at sea and time away from the home port. The work week is based on professional obligation; when at sea or away from port, hours can be extensive. In recognition of these demands, periods of paid non-obligation (compensatory time) are provided and required to be used. Evening and weekend work will be required at times, and travel to the shipyard during the annual haul-out period is necessary.
