Relief Counselors serve as Casual Agreement Employees within BAMSI's residential and day services in the Worcester area. This role is designed to provide flexible, on-demand support to adults living in Group Living Environments (GLE). The position focuses on fostering daily living skills and community integration for residents, ensuring they receive consistent rehabilitative support regardless of fluctuating business needs.
Relief Counselors work as needed, with hours and locations varying week to week. The role requires a high degree of adaptability, as counselors must be prepared to step into various shifts and locations to maintain continuity of care. A core part of the day involves implementing treatment plans and behavioral interventions under clinician guidance, teaching essential activities of daily living (ADLs) such as cooking and budgeting, and advocating for residents' needs.
This position requires a minimum commitment of 16 hours per month, with all hours audited monthly. A significant aspect of the role involves weekend coverage, which runs from 3 PM on Fridays through 9 AM on Mondays. Additionally, every Relief Counselor is obligated to work at least one major holiday between July 1 and June 30 each year. Employees are assigned to either Group A or Group B, responsible for selecting and working one holiday from their specific group, with groupings rotating annually.
Relief Counselors are expected to work all scheduled shifts unless prevented by illness or emergency. In such cases, direct communication with the program supervisor or on-call manager is required with as much notice as possible. Failure to meet the minimum monthly hour requirement or to work the assigned holiday may result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination.
To ensure the highest standard of care, Relief Counselors must complete all mandatory trainings within their first 60 days of employment. Employment eligibility is contingent upon the completion of these required trainings, and counselors must keep all certifications current throughout their tenure. BAMSI values a growth mindset and invests in employee training to support professional development.
We value your unique background, looking beyond just a resume to find candidates who bring compassion, patience, and a commitment to trauma-informed care. We believe in the power of lived experience and multilingual abilities to enhance our team's effectiveness. While a high school diploma or GED is required, mental health experience is preferred, and a valid driver's license is necessary to assist with resident mobility and transportation.
Relief Counselors are eligible to participate in the BAMSI 403(b) Retirement Savings Plan and other legally required programs, such as the Massachusetts Earned Sick Time Law.
