Part Time Upper School History Teacher

About the Role

Ascent Classical Academy of Northern Denver (ACAND) is seeking a passionate Upper School History Teacher to join our faculty in Brighton, CO. This is a part-time position (0.3 FTE) focused on teaching two sections of American History: one covering the period up to 1865 and the other covering the period since 1865. The curriculum follows Hillsdale College's K-12 Civics program, emphasizing classical pedagogy and a commitment to ordered liberty and constitutional self-government.

In this role, you will serve as a mentor and partner in a community of learners, utilizing clear communication to engage both students and parents. The position requires a professional demeanor and a "can-do" attitude to navigate a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment while maintaining the highest moral character.

A Day in the Life

Your work will center on preparing unit and lesson plans aligned with the Hillsdale College K12 Program Guide. You will teach and mentor students, utilizing classical methods to foster deep understanding. A significant portion of your time will be dedicated to assigning, collecting, and grading work in a timely manner, as well as proctoring the annual testing cycle.

You will continuously monitor student progress to identify those who need additional support or academic extensions, collaborating closely with the Student Services team to meet the requirements of special educational plans (IEPs, 504s). Regular communication with parents, typically on a weekly basis, is essential to maintain strong home-school partnerships. Additionally, you will participate in professional development offered by ACAND and Hillsdale College, with specific training days scheduled during the school year and summer.

Training and Logistics

Please note that some teachers may be required to attend training in Hillsdale, MI, for up to 10 days in June. ACACS and Hillsdale College cover all conference travel, lodging, and food for this requirement. The role involves part-time hours during school days and staff work days, with specific professional development days in the summer.

Hiring Process and Application

Candidates must be willing to undergo a comprehensive background check, including criminal record reviews and fingerprinting, to ensure student safety. Certain findings, such as convictions for violent crimes, offenses against children, or drug-related offenses, may disqualify a candidate. We also conduct reference checks to validate professional history and qualifications.
