As a Personal Care Assistant (1:1 Paraeducator) at Palmyra Pine Street Elementary, you will serve as a vital support partner for students with unique needs. Your primary mission is to provide the instructional, behavioral, and personal care support outlined in each student's Individual Education Plan (IEP). Working under the direction of the classroom teacher and the general supervision of a program supervisor, you will help create a safe, inclusive, and productive learning environment.
This is a part-time position scheduled for 5.5 hours per day, Monday through Friday, from 10:00 am to 3:30 pm, covering 185 days of the school year. The assignment is for the full school year, though it may terminate earlier based on specific student placement or evolving needs.
Your day involves close collaboration with the teaching team to ensure students receive the individualized attention they require. A significant portion of your role focuses on physical support, including lifting and assisting students ranging from pre-school age to twenty-one, as well as managing assistive appliances like wheelchairs. You will also be trained to physically restrain students in moments of emotional stress using approved non-violent crisis intervention methods (CPI, SCM, or QBS) to ensure safety for everyone involved.
Beyond direct student care, you are expected to engage in continuous professional growth. Each school year, you will complete 20 hours of staff development activities relevant to your position, with pro-ration applied based on your hire date.
To ensure the highest standard of care, this role requires specific crisis prevention certifications. Depending on program needs, you will be directed to obtain certification through the Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI), Safe Crisis Management (SCM), or Quality Behavioral Solutions: Safety-Care Crisis Prevention (QBS). Training for these methods will be provided as necessary.
