Under the supervision of the teacher, the One-to-One Paraprofessional provides direct, individualized service to students with diverse needs. This role is integral to the daily instruction and activities of the assigned school, program, and classroom. Beyond standard classroom duties, the paraprofessional's responsibilities are tailored specifically to the unique requirements of the student they support.
Students assigned to this role may have a wide range of disabilities or diagnoses, including pervasive developmental disorders, autism, physical handicaps, sensory impairments, psychiatric disorders, and brain injuries. The role also supports students who speak a language other than English, ensuring they can fully participate in their educational environment.
You will work closely with small groups of children to support instructional goals, while also providing essential personal care such as toileting, diapering, lifting, transfers, and hygiene maintenance. You may assist the school nurse with tube feedings and utilize various communication systems, including ASL, SEE 2, Picture Exchange Systems, and Braille.
A significant part of the role involves behavior management, including redirection, de-escalation, and, when necessary, physical restraint. You will collaborate with the classroom teacher to implement daily lesson plans and foster open communication with parents and staff. In some cases, the role may require specific gender alignment to ensure the comfort and safety of the student during personal care activities.
