The Instructional Assistant at Burnside Elementary School plays a vital role in supporting the educational mission of Richland County School District One. Working under regular supervision, this position is dedicated to creating a well-organized and smoothly functioning classroom environment. The primary focus is assisting teachers in instructing and directing student activities, ensuring that every learner receives the support they need to succeed.
Day-to-day, you will be the bridge between the teacher's instruction and the student's understanding. You will reinforce knowledge and skills taught in class, working closely with small groups and individuals to ensure concepts are grasped. At the elementary level, this involves listening to reading exercises, participating in free play, and assisting with basic health needs. In high school settings, the role may expand to include instructing students on subject-specific computer programs or managing computer labs independently.
Beyond the classroom, you will be a key figure in student safety and logistics, supervising students during bus loading/unloading, field trips, and on school grounds. You will also assist in maintaining student records, preparing classroom materials, and managing audio-visual equipment. This role requires adaptability, as you may need to handle emergency situations, manage behavior, and interact with a diverse range of stakeholders including parents, administrators, and fellow staff members.
Candidates must meet specific educational and training standards to be considered. Requirements include a minimum of 60 college hours from an accredited institution or a passing score of 456 or above on the Praxis ParaPro Assessment. Additionally, applicants must possess two years of consistent training and experience working with children in an educational setting. Specialized training in conflict resolution and behavior modification may be required depending on the specific needs of the school.
Richland County School District One is committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment. We comply with all federal laws, state statutes, and Board policies. We consider qualified applicants regardless of background, ensuring that our staff reflects the community we serve and that all employees are treated with dignity and respect.
