The Smilow Ambulatory Multispecialty Department (YSC) is rooted in oncology nursing excellence and serves as a hub for patients undergoing cancer treatment and management for solid tumor cancers. This specialized department caters to both medical oncology patients, who receive systemic therapies like chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and targeted therapies, and surgical oncology patients, who are in various stages of their surgical journey, including pre-operative evaluation, post-operative care, and follow-up.
Our core philosophy is to provide multidisciplinary and comprehensive cancer care to patients and their support system. We aim to provide a holistic approach to cancer care, ensuring that patients receive not only the most advanced medical and surgical treatments but also the crucial support services needed to navigate their cancer journey effectively.
As a Registered Nurse in this specialized environment, you will work under the supervision of the Nurse Manager or Clinical Coordinator. You will assess, plan, implement, evaluate, and supervise individual patient care on the nursing unit according to established policies and procedures. This role involves providing supervision to non-RN personnel and, when assuming the charge role, delegating and supervising unit activities. You may be required to work on other nursing units according to the distribution of staff and patients.
In this position, you will function as a preceptor to new staff and serve as a charge nurse. You will collaborate with the healthcare team to develop and communicate a plan of care that reflects individualized patient problems and interventions, involving the patient and family in the process. Your day-to-day work includes evaluating the effectiveness of care, revising plans as needed, and providing educational opportunities for patients and families.
Specific to this unit, you will demonstrate competency in the care of neuro patients, including neuro assessment, airway management, and caring for tracheostomy patients. Additionally, you will be skilled in the use of equipment and care for patients in a halo brace, as well as managing patients on a ventilator.
