The Manager of External Affairs is a strategic leader dedicated to advancing Selfhelp's mission by managing government relations, external partnerships, and public policy engagement. This role serves as the organization's voice in the public sphere, working closely with city, state, and federal stakeholders, coalition partners, and internal program leaders to elevate Selfhelp's visibility and advocate for community needs.
As a registered NYS and NYC lobbyist, you will represent Selfhelp's budgetary and policy interests while overseeing compliance and filings. Your day-to-day involves coordinating site visits, briefings, and testimony with government officials, while monitoring legislation and funding opportunities to ensure Selfhelp's programs and strategy remain responsive to the evolving landscape. You will also act as a key spokesperson, building relationships with media and preparing senior leadership and subject-matter experts for high-level engagements.
Beyond policy, this position plays a vital role in strategic communications. You will collaborate with the Communications team to align advocacy goals with organizational messaging, contributing to the development of talking points, website content, and external-facing materials. This role requires a unique blend of political acumen and interpersonal skill to navigate diverse stakeholders, from elected officials to community members, ensuring that external engagement consistently supports Selfhelp's priorities in aging services, housing, mental health, and immigrant support.
