This position serves as a skilled Buildings and Grounds Maintenance professional responsible for the upkeep and repair of city facilities. The role is critical to ensuring operational continuity, safety, and functionality across the city's infrastructure. Incumbents perform a wide variety of skilled maintenance tasks, ranging from general repairs to specialized work in carpentry, plumbing, electrical systems, and HVAC. The day-to-day life of this role involves a dynamic mix of indoor and outdoor environments. Approximately two-thirds of the work is performed outdoors under varying weather conditions, while the remainder takes place inside city buildings. The incumbent must be prepared to respond to emergency calls 24 hours a day on a rotating basis, often working beyond normal hours to address critical infrastructure failures. The role requires frequent interaction with the public, city staff, and supervisors to coordinate repairs, exchange information, and maintain effective working relationships.
The work environment is characterized by varied conditions, including loud noise, extreme temperatures, and exposure to fumes or airborne particles. Employees regularly work in high places, handle toxic or caustic chemicals, and operate near moving mechanical parts. Safety is a paramount concern; strict adherence to safety precautions is required at all times to prevent personal injury, property damage, or liability issues. The role involves significant physical activity, including climbing, reaching, and lifting objects up to 50 lbs.
Candidates must possess a valid driver's license and have completed a vocational school education or equivalent training in building trades, along with five years of prior experience in building and ground maintenance. The selection process evaluates technical knowledge of maintenance and repairs, the ability to interpret building plans, and the skill to use power and hand tools effectively.
